A career in Law Enforcement in the state of Michigan requires a high school diploma/equivalent, 18-21 years of age, U.S. citizen, valid drivers license in the state of Michigan, good moral and ethical values, pass a Physical and Medical exam, pass a Psychiatric evaluation, successful completion of a basic training progaram from a Police Academy, pass a drug test, pass a background investigation, and pass/obtain certification through MCOLES (Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards). Before applying for licensure they are 2 requirements that need to be met according to MCOLES. The 2 requirements are employment with a law enforcement agency or if you have previous licensure as a police officer in the state of Michigan. If you are from another state seeking licensure and you have all the requirements that MCOLES has listed then MCOLES can grant you licensure by another process called Recognition of Prior training and experience. Also, you must be able to pass a Reading and Writing exam as well as a Physical Fitness test that will be given by MCOLES.
The state of Michigan has a great need for Police officers especially in the Detroit area. Recruitment and training was given in the Atlanta, Georgia area at the beginning of July, and relocation to Detroit, MI was a requirement for the people that completed the training program. However, relocation assistance was not provided. Police officers are needed for some of the Universities in Michigan to provide safety on the campuses. Police officers are able to assist in investigations, control crimes in the communities, handle traffic violations, make arrests when needed, etc. Some of the Police officers are also trained to be Firefighters, in case they are needed to help with those situations. As a Police officer you are able to move into other areas of Law Enforcement after years of experience and training. Other areas include Investigation Divisions and Chief of Police just to name a few.
Depending on your experience and training, salaries for police officers can range from $30,000 to $75,000. But an average starting salary in Michigan starts at 53,000. Keep in mind that this includes benefits. Police officers can retire after 25 years of service. Some of the benefits include Medical and Dental Insurance, Pension, 401K, vacation and holiday pay, uniforms provided and education assistance. Michigan also has a Police Officer and Firefighter Survivor Tuition Act that was started in 1996. This Act waives the fees of public community colleges, junior colleges, and state universities for spouses and children that are left behind as the result of the death of the police officer or firefighter. The need for police officers in Michigan are in demand with decent benefits and above minimum wage salary.
